When you right-click on your desktop or in a folder you will see an AMD VISION Engine Control Center (formerly know as ATI Catalyst) entry in your right-click menu which allows you to have a direct access to the AMD Vision Control Center and fiddle with your graphics card settings. If you find this annoying and don't use that function or you have other means to access it (like from the Start menu) you might want to wish to remove it.
Removing the AMD Vision entry context-menu entry:
1. Open regedit.exe. (Start > Run.. (alternatively Windows + R) > type regedit > press OK)
2. Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ACE
3. Double-click on the (Default) key and rename the value data to whatever you wish or put a few dashes in front of it to disable it, as shown in the picture:
4. Changes take effect immediately. You can close regedit.exe.
Note: these steps are valid for any version of Windows.

ReplyDeleteThis worked successfully for me as well - however, whenever I reboot my computer, my AMD's driver automatically uninstalls itself and I'm left with a generic 800x600 input. I tried reinstalling the driver and rebooting, but I had the same problem until, after using process of elimination, I tried undoing the changes I made to the registry that hid this button from the context menu. Now it works just fine. Anyone else have the same problem? For now I'm just living with the eyesore until I find a solution.
ReplyDeletePretty sure this doesn't uninstall your graphics card driver. The problem is on your end. Disabling this key merely removes the option from the right-click menu, which can be annoying as it sometimes slows down the opening of the menu in question.

ReplyDeleteThe right click context menu is one of the best things about Windows (I so miss it when I'm on a Mac). So I resent AMD adding a useless extra line that I'll never use and, worse, not providing an easy way to disable it!!

I suppose I can always try to undo the changes or use backup and restore if it does this for me but... wow that's quite a little catch. Don't you kind of need your graphics card and drivers lol?
By the fact that no one else complained about this , I'm hoping it was a one off and won't happen to me, but damn that arrogant amd intrusion into our context menu, so annoying, i'm gonna throw caution to the wind and try it anyway because that's just sooooo annoying.

Really? I thought the article made this clear: we want to remove that item from our context menu because it's arrogant and useless to put it there because it's something we hardly ever use if at all. Why would this mean we want to get rid of our graphics card?

ReplyDeleteExcellent. I'm running a large network on an Active Directory domain. Group Policy settings can prevent users messing with their screen resolution etc through the display properties dialogue, and then AMD put this item in and override the restrictions I've put on there.
ReplyDeleteIntel did something similar a while back (delete the "igfxcpl.dll" file from system32 to get rid of this, if memory serves). A message to both Intel and AMD - stop putting redundant properties dialogue boxes into context menus. I don't want my users changing resolution/colour depth etc, I've locked it down to the native resolution of their display, maximum refresh rate, maximum colour depth. I do NOT want them to be able to change it!
